The Inspiration

After 8 consecutive days of journaling in the Ugly Art Club, I almost called it quits. But late last night, an idea struck. I’d been playing with a new medium . . . tar gel. As I was dripping gel onto paper and thinking about the prompt, I found myself writing the word “people” and then this phrase just struck me. One of my fav songs, even to this day, is Jesse Collin Young’s “Get Together.” It always has the power to move me (usually to tears, as memories of the good ole days in the 60’s flood through me). Music is ALWAYS a huge source of inspiration for me.

The Process

I was drawn to the idea of finding images of people in magazines and making those a focal point, but my stash of magazines is quite small. I only found one image that appealed to me, used that, and made the words a dominant feature, as they are such a vital message.

Love is but a song we singFears' the way we dieYou can make the mountains ringOr make the angels cryThough the dove is on the wingAnd you may not know why
Come on people nowSmile on your brotherEverybody get togetherAnd try to love one another right now
Some may come and some may goHe will surely passWhen the one that left us hereReturns for us at lastWe are but a moment's sunlightFading in the grass
If you hear the song I singYou will understand, listenYou hold the key to love and fearAll in your trembling handJust one key unlocks them bothIt's there at your command
Come on people nowSmile on your brotherEverybody get togetherAnd try to love one another right now
